Она отходит от существующего магистрального нефтепровода в Тайшете, на западе Иркутской области, и проходит севернее озера Байкал до Сковородино, откуда будет построено ответвление в Китай.
Вся система стоила государственной Транснефти $12 миллиардов, и еще $10 миллиардов потребуется на вторую очередь нефтепровода, которая соединит Сковородино и Козьмино, заменив железную дорогу.
Проектная мощность первой очереди ВСТО от Тайшета до Сковородино составляет 30 миллионов тонн нефти в год. Поскольку половина этого объема, как ожидается, уйдет по трубопроводу в Китай, мощность наливной эстакады в Сковородино и терминала Козьмино составит 15 миллионов тонн в год.
