Нелюбовь к либерализму Мохаммаду Бухари сохранил и впоследствии. В 1988 году он вышел из-под домашнего ареста и вернулся в политику. Заодно занялся бизнесом: в 1990-е он возглавлял солидный нефтяной трастовый фонд. А в 2000–2010-е целеустремлённо боролся за высшую государственную должность. Баллотировался на президентских выборах 2003-го, 2007-го и 2011-го – но уже в рамках демократической парадигмы. Отвечая на упрёки в авторитарном прошлом, Бухари отвечал, что «преобразовался в демократа».
В 2015 году с четвёртой попытки ему удалось победить на выборах и вновь возглавить Нигерию. Избран он был как кандидат партии ВПК, консультативного члена Социнтерна.
Бухари предстал теперь перед нацией в другой ипостаси. Но версия «Бухари 2.0» всё-таки немало позаимствовала от генерала-1984. Вновь на первом плане борьба с коррупцией. Четыре года на всех уровнях управления идут расследования и судебные процессы. Говорить об успехе этой неблагодарной борьбы в Нигерии вряд ли можно. Но антикоррупционность Бухари обычно считается искренней.
Социал-демократический крен проявился в укреплении социального и трудового законодательства, в запуске масштабных госпроектов – строительства «стратегических» дорог, мостов и промышленных предприятий. Но массированное госвмешательство даёт закономерный результат: в последнее время нигерийская экономика пребывает скорее в состоянии рецессии. При этом немало средств тратится на силовые структуры. Это объяснимо: в Нигерии активны исламистские террористы «Боко харам», сепаратисты и политизированный криминал. Кстати, в конфессиональной политике мусульманин Бухари, пытается утвердить религиозный мир: «Религию нельзя использовать для угнетения других».
