Как сообщает Федеральное космическое агентство (Рорскосмос), 5 апреля на 74-году жизни после тяжелой продолжительной болезни скончался дважды Герой Советского Союза, летчик-космонавт СССР, член Центрального Комитета КПРФ, депутат Государственной Думы Федерального Собрания Российской Федерации с первого по четвертый созыв Виталий Иванович Севастьянов.
Виталий Севастьянов был автором более 200 научных публикаций, целого ряда изобретений и открытий. Будучи зачислен в 1967 году в отряд космонавтов, Севастьянов дважды – в 1970 и в 1975 годах – совершил полеты в космос.
Виталий Иванович был одним из учеников Сергея Павловича Королева, многие годы проработал в НПО «Энергия».
«Мы знали Виталия Ивановича Севастьянова как чуткого и отзывчивого человека, высокого профессионала своего дела, настоящего Патриота России. Он был яркой и неординарной личностью, пользовался всеобщей любовью у нас в стране и за рубежом. Сегодня мы отдаем низкий поклон Виталию Ивановичу, передаем самые глубокие соболезнования его родным и близким», — отмечается в сообщении пресс-службы Роскосмоса.

Виталий Севастьянов родился 8 июля 1935 г. в городе Красноуральске Свердловской области. В 1959 г. окончил Московский авиационный институт имени Серго Орджоникидзе (МАИ). После окончания института начал работать в ОКБ-1 (ныне НПО «Энергия»). Одновременно с разработкой образцов космической техники читал лекции членам отряда космонавтов. В 1965 г. окончил аспирантуру МАИ и защитил кандидатскую диссертацию.
В 1967 г. Севастьянов был зачислен в отряд советских космонавтов (Группа гражданских специалистов № 3). Проходил подготовку к полетам на кораблях типа Союз. Был одним из участников подготовки к полетам советских космических кораблей на Луну, входил в состав одного из первых «лунных» экипажей.
После закрытия «лунной» программы готовился к полетам на кораблях Союз по программе создания орбитальных космических станций. В октябре 1969 г. входил в состав дублирующего экипажа космического корабля «Союз-8».
