Пономарев также пояснил, что формальной причиной может быть грант, который получила его НКО «Горячая линия» от комитета ООН по пыткам». В конце декабря Пономарев рассказывал в эфире радио «Эхо Москвы», что движение «За права человека» впервые за девять лет не получило президентский грант, и у движения нет денег, чтобы продолжать работу. Правозащитник рассказал, что полученные от ООН деньги тратились на адвокатов, которые выезжали в те колонии, из которых поступали жалобы на пытки. Он уточнил, что другой причиной попадания в реестр иноагентов может быть то, что одна из членов совета движения получила деньги по проекту, организованному Советом Европы.
В начале декабря суд в Москве арестовал 77-летнего правозащитника на 25 суток, признав его виновным в повторном нарушении порядка проведения митингов за пост в Фейсбуке с призывом принять участие в акции в поддержку фигурантов дел «Сети» и «Нового величия». Позже Мосгорсуд сократил срок административного ареста до 16 суток.
Напомним, что Министерство юстиции в 2014 году признавало движение «За права человека» «иностранным агентом», но позднее это решение было отменено, так как Минюст пришел к выводу, что движение перестало выполнять функции «агента».
