Основатель и лидер повстанческого движения Юнита (в СССР и России известно как УНИТА), бессменный команданте партизанской армии. «Эта дата будет отмечаться во всех провинциях Анголы. Началась многолетняя вооружённая борьба за национальную независимость, демократию и социальную справедливость.
Вначале Савимби и его соратники сражались за независимость Анголы. Эта цель была достигнута после Португальской революции. Но ещё до 11 ноября 1975 года в Анголе началась гражданская война. Движение Савимби выступило против коммунистического режима, установленного в стране партией МПЛА, тайной полицией ДИСА, кубинскими экспедиционными войсками и советскими танками. С переменным успехом война шла почти тридцать лет. Это был важный участок глобального противостояния свободы и коммунизма. В военной штаб-квартире Савимби – городе Джамба – в 1985 году собралась международная конференция антикоммунистических партизан. Но сменить власть в стране ему не удалось: после выборов 1992-го власти устроили кровавую «резню Хэллоуин», не допустив избрания Савимби президентом. Война продолжалась ещё десять лет. 22 февраля 2002 года Жонаш Савимби с оружием в руках погиб в последнем бою.
Сегодня УНИТА – влиятельная парламентская партия. Она много делает в процессе реформ, начатых после прихода на президентский пост Жуана Лоренсу. На последних парламентских выборах 2017 года УНИТА получила более четверти голосов (депутатом стал, в частности, и Рафаэл Савимби). Председателем партии является Исайаш Самакува. Своеобразным хранителем традиций выступает генерал повстанческой армии Абилио Камалата Нума – ныне крупный ангольский политик и тоже депутат парламента. Видную роль играет старшая сестра основателя Джудит Савимби Пена.
Знамением перемен стало 1 июня 2019-го. Спустя семнадцать лет Савимби был перезахоронен в родовом селении Лопитанга (муниципалитет Андуло), вместе со своими предками. «Траур завершён лишь теперь», – объявил Самакува на торжественной церемонии.
