Нападение было совершено на политехнический колледж в городе Муби на северо-востоке страны. Вооруженные люди в камуфляжной форме ворвались в общежитие и устроили расправу над студентами, открыв по ним огонь и применяя ножи.
Среди убитых были как христиане, так и мусульмане. Ответственность за преступление пока не взяла на себя ни одна из группировок, действующих на территории Нигерии. В этом регионе Нигерии действует исламская экстремистская группировка «Боко харам», ранее организовавшая множество терактов с десятками жертв.
