Египетские власти объявили о намерении построить новый канал, который будет вырыт параллельно Суэцкому и станет ему альтернативой. Об этом сообщает Reuters со ссылкой на администрацию Суэцкого канала.
По словам представителя администрации объекта Мохаба Мамиша, протяженность этого канала составит 72 километра. Стоимость проекта оценивается в четыре миллиарда долларов.
«Данный проект превратит Египет в один из крупнейших промышленных центров в мире и сделает его центром мировой экономики», — заявил глава управления Суэцким каналом.
Через Суэцкий канал осуществляется около 10% мировых морских перевозок. Он был открыт для судоходства 17 ноября 1869 года и стал кратчайшим водным путем между Индийским океаном и областью Средиземного моря в Атлантическом океане. Перевозка грузов по нему остается одним из наиболее дешевых и безопасных способов транспортировки товаров в регионе.
Эксплуатация канала наравне с туризмом является основным источником пополнения госбюджета Египта.
