Теперь разработчики говорят, что преимуществом альтернативного пути от Витебского вокзала станут отсутствие необходимости коренной реконструкции существующих станций и перегонов Октябрьской железной дороги и отсутствие грузового движения на путях Витебского направления, используемых для пассажирского движения, что в перспективе позволит повысить маршрутную скорость пассажирских поездов.
Кроме того, как отмечается, Витебский вокзал удобнее для прибытия пассажиров, так как расположен в самом центре города возле станций двух разных линий метрополитена. Также отмечается возможность организовать дополнительную промежуточную остановку на станции метро «Купчино».
Согласно сообщению аппарата Албина, стоимость ветки до Витебского вокзала будет «сопоставима» с ценой за перегон Пулково — Балтийский вокзал (около 15 млрд рублей). 10 млрд рублей Смольный получит из федерального бюджета.
Основная часть проекта должна быть готова к лету. Поиск инвестора будет вестись на основе конкурса на государственно-частное партнерство.
Кроме того, отмечается, что петербургской скоростной электричке, возможно, придется давать иное название. Среди рабочих вариантов: «А-экспресс», «Пулковский экспресс», «Царскосельский экспресс».
