Отмечается, что он возглавил официальную российскую делегацию по поручению президента России Владимира Путина, который не смог прибыть на мероприятие из-за плотного рабочего графика. В делегацию также входит вице-премьер, руководитель аппарата правительства России Сергей Приходько.
Президент Узбекистана Ислам Каримов скончался 2 сентября в возрасте 78 лет. Его похоронят на кладбище на его родине в Самарканде вблизи исторического памятника Шахи-Зинда.
Согласно Конституции Узбекистана, президентские полномочия временно принял председатель сената Нигматулла Юлдашев. В республике объявлен трехдневный траур.
