Ожидается, что одной из основных целей визита станет подписание промежуточного соглашения о российских нефтегазовых поставках в Китай по ответвлению трубопровода Восточная Сибирь — Тихий Океан (ВСТО). Кроме того, планируется подписание соглашения о строительстве газопровода из Западной Сибири в Китай (часть проекта «Алтай»). Пропускная способность трубопровода может составить 38 млрд кубометров газа в год. Несмотря на демонстрацию близкого партнёрства, поставки российских энергоносителей в КНР зачастую вызывали серьёзные коммерческие конфликты и коллизии. Визит Си Цзиньпина имеет одной из задач урегулирование этих вопросов.
Посещение РФ — первый зарубежный визит Си Цзиньпина после занятия высших партийно-государственных должностей.
