Христианско-демократический блок «Европейская народная партия» получил 23,8 процента голосов, его союзники из «Прогрессивного альянса социалистов и демократов» — чуть менее 20 процентов. Таким образом, они смогут занять 179 и 150 парламентских кресел соответственно. Однако, как и раньше, совместно эти два блока партий не набирают абсолютного большинства голосов и для формирования правящей коалиции будут нуждаться в союзниках.
Альянсы националистов и евроскептиков — «Европа за свободу и прямую демократию» и «Европа наций и свобод» — получили заметно большую поддержку электората, чем на прошлых выборах, и займут 56 и 58 мест соответственно. Больше голосов в этот раз получили и левые «Зеленые»: им достанется 70 мест в общем для ЕС парламенте. В предыдущем его составе их представителей насчитывалось лишь 52.
Европарламент — законодательный орган, который управляет Евросоюзом вместе с Европейским советом. Он формирует бюджетную комиссию и следит за работой Европейской комиссии. Нынешний состав Европейского парламента будет работать до 2024 года. Наибольшее число депутатов в Европарламент направляет Германия (96 из 751), за которой следуют Франция (74), Италия и Великобритания (по 73), Испания (54), Польша (51). Наименьшее число депутатов (по шесть) представляют Люксембург, Кипр, Эстония и Мальта.
