Около пятидесяти человек отметили на Исаакиевской площади 24-ю годовщину Августовского путча, гражданского восстания и победы над ГКЧП. Собрались люди в основном среднего и пожилого возраста, отмечает «Росбалт». Многие из них участвовали в ленинградских событиях 19–21 августа 1991 года. Тогда совместными усилиями демократических активистов, мэрии, Ленсовета и командования ЛенВО удалось предотвратить ввод войск в город. Митинг протеста на Дворцовой площади собрал 20 августа 1991-го около 100 тысяч человек.
Участники акции вспомнили атмосферу демократического единения, почтили память единомышленников, ушедших из жизни за прошедшие годы (был установлен портрет Валерии Новодворской). Они резко осудили политику нынешних властей РФ, которая, по их мнению, продолжает курс ГКЧП. Своим присутствием с ними солидаризировались депутаты Заксобрания Борис Вишневский и Максим Резник.
Члены лоялистского НОДа, выставив свои пикеты, пели гимн СССР, прославляли ГКЧП и кричали здравицы президенту Путину (в августе 1991-го – видному чиновнику мэрии, приближённому демократа Анатолия Собчака, выступившего против путча). НОДовцы попытались спровоцировать очередной конфликт. В ответ член политсовета петербургского отделения «Солидарности» Евгений Бестужев в довольно резкой форме предложил им покинуть место памятного мероприятия. Поскольку количество участников акции постепенно увеличивалось, а сотрудники полиции готовы были пресечь столкновение, НОДовцы от обострения воздержались. Один из них требовал предоставить ему слово для высказывания особого мнения, но был выдворен из круга собравшихся Евгением Бестужевым, Иосифом Скаковским и Владиславом Цитовичем.
В Москве аналогичная акция запланирована на 22 августа на Лермонтовской площади. Митинг «Свободу России!» проведут общественное движение «Единство равных» (гражданская инициатива прямой демократии) и Русский объединённый национальный альянс (антиимперские национал-патриоты). Организаторы намерены вспомнить дни мирной революции и обсудить способы противостояния «красночекистскому реваншу».
