21 июля 2010 г. В 5.25 мск на территории Баксанской ГЭС раздался взрыв. В результате пострадал машинный зал, на данный момент на месте пожара работают МЧС, ФСБ и МВД. Площадь возгорания и масштаб разрушений уточняются, сообщает пресс-служба ОАО «РусГидро».
По предварительным сведениям, причиной взрыва и пожара стал теракт, погибли два охранника, два человека госпитализированы.
Повреждения получил только машинный зал гидроэлектростанции. Открыты затворы ГЭС, вода сбрасывается вхолостую. Ограничений энергоснабжения потребителей нет.

Баксанская ГЭС входит в состав Кабардино-Балкарского филиала ОАО «РусГидро», расположена на реке Баксан Баксанского района Кабардино-Балкарской республики. Установленная мощность ГЭС – 25 МВт.
Баксанская ГЭС построена в 1930—1936 годах по уточненному плану ГОЭЛРО. Первый агрегат мощностью 8300 кВт введен в работу 20 сентября 1936 года.
