Сегодня исполнилось 25 лет знаменательной даты российской истории — 11 июля 1989 года в Кузбассе начались шахтёрские забастовки, вскоре охватившие все угледобывающие районы СССР. Первая стачка вспыхнула в Междуреченске Кемеровской области. Авангард советского рабочего класса требовал улучшения условий труда, ликвидации бюрократических привилегий, демократизации общества и трудового самоуправления.
Рабочие комитеты заставили правительство СССР вступить в переговоры. Совмин Николая Рыжкова вынужден был пойти на уступки. Знаменитое «Постановление № 608» установило определённые социальные гарантии. Однако выполнение договорённостей оказалось сорвано, и уже в конце 1989 года начались шахтёрские выступления уже под политическими лозунгами – отмена «руководящей роли» КПСС, свободные выборы на всех уровнях (в авангарде выступили горняки Донбасса и Воркуты, особенно шахта «Воргашорская»). Произошло смыкание общедемократического, национального и забастовочного движений против режима КПСС. Весной 1991 года началась политическая шахтёрская забастовка.
Впоследствии шахтёрское движение пережило не один раскол и не раз меняло позиции. Однако самоорганизация породила Независимый профсоюз горняков России. Сегодня НПГР проводит в Москве Круглый стол «25 лет массовым шахтёрским забастовкам: уроки для настоящего и будущего». Пройдёт также международная конференция шахтёрской общественности России, Казахстана и Украины. В шахтёрских городах идут собрания с участием ветеранов забастовочного движения.
